WHAT YOU NEED TO LOOK AT IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE RESTRICTIONS ON YOUR PROPERTY AND THE USE OF IT

Everything that you need to review should be available at the municipal clerk's office.

WHAT TO ASK FOR:

There are three important documents that must be reviewed, in order to understand what the government has planned for your property:

  1. The MASTER PLAN (a/k/a "master land use plan" or "future land use plan");
  2. The ZONING ORDINANCE; and;
  3. The ZONING MAP.

The fact is that copies of these documents MUST be provided by the municipal clerk, upon request, since they are public documents.

In the unfortunate event that the municipality doesn't understand their obligation to give you what you need to allow you to understand how you can use your property, there are ways that you can force the issue, at least in Michigan. See sample FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST.
